Paper-craft is the process of manipulating paper in ways to create different shapes and images. This can range from the most basic of paper airplanes to the most complicated of designs like intricate shapes and objects with mobility. These creations can be 2D or 3D depending on the artist.

The first image I put is of Sumi, an 8.5 metre long crocodile that Nahoko had made in 2019. The paper she used for this piece was painted with black and gold paint on both sides prior to cutting to create a more dynamic and visually appealing look. The second piece is called Cloud Leopard, made in 2013 for her Paris exhibit. This piece was suspended from the ceiling and was created from black paper.

Nahoko Kojima uses her ability to cut intricate designs and shapes to create different natural phenomenons, animals and textures out of singular pieces of japanese washi paper. Her pieces are usually installed within acrylic sheets or sometimes made into 3D artworks at galleries. Her recreation of animals are often life size and include many intricate details and designs within each cut. She uses her knowledge of negative shapes to create these images. Her pieces are able to be viewed from all angles as every angle created a new dimension and image to be seen.

I selected this specific artist for this project as I found her use of negative shapes to create details within her work to be highly captivating. The details she is able to form out of 1 singular sheet of paper is astounding, especially when added to her 3D pieces. Being a very detail oriented person, I appreciated and am able to acknowledge the sheer amount of time and effort put into each individual cut, making sure that everything is precise and to the point.
